本研究では、バリにいおけるシヴァ信仰に関して、源流であるインド・サンクリット文献と、ジャワ・バリの古ジャワ語文献のそれぞれの読解と相互の比較により、思想や儀礼の受容と変容の様相を明らかにすることを目指した。関連の刊本および写本資料の収集は国内で可能な範囲で文献資料を入手した。これらに基づいたテキストのデータベース化は補助協力者の助力も得て着実に進められた。今後、関連諸文献のデータと併せてインデックス及びコンコーダンス構築が整えば、この分野でかねてより期待されている、テキスト相互の比較研究による文献研究を促進する一助になろう。諸文献読解およびインド原典との対照による具体的な研究成果については、平成6年後半にはある程度まとまった形で発表したいと思うが、以下にその要点を概略したい。現代バリにおいてはプダンダと呼ばれるシヴァ系僧侶は聖水を司ることを主要な機能とする。またSaiva-Siddhanta関連文献および現在の儀礼用教典からは、聖山アグン山の最高神格化が随所に見て取れ、シヴァ信仰はむしろそれと同化する形で受け入れられていると解釈される面がある。こうしたバリ的特徴は、ヒンドゥー以前の土着要素を大きな土台にしそこにヒンドゥー的要素を取り込んでいったという受容過程があったことを推測させる。シヴァ教の思想や教義を中心とする文献がバリにもたらされ僧侶階級によって積極的に理解・解釈が試みられる一方、かなり伝統的な民俗信仰に引きつけた形で一般に受容されていったと見ることができよう。ジャワ・バリのヒンドゥー文化を考えるうえで見逃してはならないのは、その直接間接の源泉が南インドであったということである。ジャワやバリに渡ったのと同時期の南インドにおけるシヴァ信仰をさらに詳しく検討し、バリ的変容の様相をより明確にすることを今後の課題としたい。
