古ジャワ版『マハーバーラタ』におけるヒンドウー教の倫理観の伝承と受容に関して、昨年度の「バガヴァッドギーター」テキスト読解・原典比較研究の成果を受けて、本年度は、典拠不詳のサンスクリット引用詩節の継続研究、および、古ジャワ語・サンスクリット語両方のテキストの異読の参照、教訓や箴言に関する箇所についての綿密な読解比較を進めた。本年度の研究成果は主に次の2点にまとめられる。1.古ジャワ版には、サンスクリット原典の刊本やその異読にもみられないサンスクリット詩節が含まれているが、そのうち一つは、インドのシヴァ教の一派であるパーシュパタ(獣主)派のテキストに引かれる詩句と著しく近似する。ほかにも、シヴァ神を讃えるサンスクリット語の断片が増広されており、後代の写本伝承過程で誤って混入したと片づけられる問題ではない。他の古ジャワ語文献にも獣主派の影響がみられることが指摘されており、今後、古ジャワ世界におけるシヴァ教獣主派の受容について体系的に研究することが不可欠である。2.古ジャワ版制作(翻案)者は、ほかの古ジャワ文学作品には稀な登場人物の異名も正しく同定し、また、原典にはない独特のサンスクリット派生語を用いて、原典の内容を忠実にかつシンプルに描くことに成功しており、その原典理解の深さを示している。一方、先述のように、本来はヴィシュヌ神への帰依を歌った「バガヴァッドギーター」にシヴァ教的要素を盛り込んだほか、古ジャワ版独特の解釈もみられる。一例を挙げれば、原典で「執着」とするところをことごとく「人との交わり」という語に置き換えているが、これは性的な意味合いを含む古ジャワ独特の表現である。
