意味記憶における語彙的表象の構造と処理過程に関して、単語の認知という大きな枠組みの中での検討を進めるために、課題の遂行の際に語彙的情報により強く依存すると思われる音読課題を用いて、同一の実験の中で音韻的プライミング効果と意味的プライミング効果の成否を調べるようなパラダイムの実験を行った。プライムとターゲットの関係が実験要因であって、両者の間に音韻的な関連のみがある音韻的関連条件、両者の間に意味的な関連のみがある意味的関連条件、プライムに中立刺激を用いる中立条件、両者の間に音韻的にも意味的にも関連のない無関連条件の4条件を設けた。また、SOA条件を400msに設定し、音読課題における反応時間を測定した。実験の結果、意味的関連条件と中立条件との間に有意差が認められた。音韻的関連条件と中立条件との間、および中立条件と無関連条件との間には有意差は認められなかった。すなわち、意味的プライミング効果は促進の効果として生じているが、音韻的プライミング効果は促進の効果として生じていないこと、抑制の効果は生じていないこと、の3点が明らかになった。井上(1991)では、本実験と同様のプライミング効果を調べているが、その結果は今回の実験結果と同じパターンを示すものであった。この先行研究の結果と本実験の結果を合わせて考察すると、音読課題と語彙決定課題という課題の違いをこえて同様の結果が得られたことから、SOA400msの条件下では概念的表象においては十分な活性化の拡散が生じているが、語彙的表象における活性化の拡散はまだ十分なものではないということが、なお一層強く示唆された。
