本研究は、意思決定集団における特徴的な合意形成過程を実験的に再現し、社会心理学的な分析・検討を行った。伝統的な集団意思決定研究では、メンバーのもつさまざまな選好を分析の最小単位とし、それらが、どのように集約されるのかという、“合意"の政治力学的な形成過程を強調する場合が多い。本研究では、このような観点をとらず、合意形成過程を、「メンバーが決定場面に持ち込む諸知識・信念などの認知的資源が、集団力学的なメカニズムによって選択的に利用されるプロセス」と捉えた。言い換えるとここでの理論的な分析の最小単位はメンバーの"選好"ではなく、選好の背景にある"認知"に置かれている。本研究での主要な論点は、メンバーのもつ諸知識が集団的にどの程度効率的に利用されるのかの検討にあった。こうした問題を検討するため、2つの社会心理学実験を行った。これらの実験では、大学生の被験者を中心とする一時的な作業集団を形成し、主観的判断を含むような決定課題を与えた。実験1では、課題領域において各メンバーがどのような知識・信念を持っているかをリスト想起法、プロトコル法によりまず計測した上で、メンバー間で最終決定が得られるまで自由な討議を行わせた。次のような知見が得られた。1.集団決定の最終的な内容は、討議開始前の段階でメンバーが"共有"している信念(つまり皆が共通にもっている既知情報)の方向に傾きやすい。2.各メンバーが独自に持っている新規情報は、集団討議の中で"発掘"されにくい。3.信念共有度において地位の高いメンバーほど集団討議の中で中心的な役割を占めやすい。これらの結果は、集団によるメンバーの知識集積の効率性について否定的な含みをもつ。なお、実験2については、現在データの分析を行っている。
