本年度の研究の目的は、相互作用を前提とする集団意思決定場面において、集団を構成するメンバーが決定問題についてどのような心的表象(mental representation)を形成するのかを検討することにあった。近年認知科学で「社会的に共有された認知」(socially shared cognition)という概念が注目されているが、ここでは、相互作用を通じ決定問題に関するメンバーの心的表象(問題の知識的な表現)がどの程度収束するのか、合議という相互作用は認知の共有化を促進させる媒体としてどの程度有効な媒体と言えるか、について実証的な検討を行った。本年度の研究では、集団意思決定場面として模擬陪審場面を設定した。ここでは、(1)提示された一連の証拠・証言を被験者が個人的にどのように表象するのか、(2)各被験者が形成した心的表象が、合議過程を通じてどのように変容するのか(集団内で共通の心的表象が作られるのか)、が中心的な検討課題であった。複数の実験の結果、以下の知見が得られた。(1)証拠・証言の知識表現化には、大別して2つの代表的なタイプが見られる。1つは、証拠・証言がそれぞれの発言者をノードとして表現される形式(「証人中心型」)であり、もう1つは、証拠・証言が時系列に沿って再構成される形式(「ストーリー型」)である。(2)2つの知識表現形式では、相対的に、「ストーリー型」の方が、「証人中心型」よりも、証拠の正確な記銘・評価などの点で優れた、優越的な表象形式だと言える。(3)合議過程を通じて、認知の体制化の促進が起こるのは、あらかじめ「ストーリー型」の表現形式を形成したメンバーの間においてのみである。つまり、相互作用を開始する前の段階で複数のメンバーが「ストーリー型」知識表現を形成し、複数のメンバーが「証人中心型」表現を形成していたとすると、相互作用を通じて、前者が後者を“駆逐"することなく、「ストーリー型」を形成していた者の間だけで、同型式へのさらなる体制化が促進された。一方、「証人中心型」の知識表現を形成していた者は、相互作用を通じて、他者からの認知的な影響をほとんど受けない。なお、以上の研究結果の一部は、亀田(印刷中)、亀田・滝聞・大坪(1994)に報告されている。
