集団における合意の形成過程を、個人の選好の背景を成す認知・知識要素がメンバー間でどのように集約・共有されるのかという観点から、実験的に検討した。本研究では、特に、メンバーの知識が、スクリプトやスキーマなどといった非多属性型の構造として体制化される決定課題を用いて検討を行った。具体的には、陪審・司法場面における判断課題がこれに当たる。人々が司法場面で提示されるさまざまな証拠を心的に表現する代表的なパターンには、証人中心型の知識構造と、時系列型の知識構造があるとされる。前者は、各証拠を証言者をノードとして体制化する構造であり、後者は各証拠を事件の時間的展開に沿って体制化する構造である。一般に、時系列型の知識構造は、証人中心型の知識構造と比べて、司法判断を行う上でより使いやすく、優れた知識構造であるとされる。本研究では、これらの異なるタイプの知識構造をもつ人々の間で集団としての意思決定(集団評決などの司法判断)を行う場合に、どのような合議過程が発生し、それがメンバーの知識構造にどのような影響を与えるかを一連の実験により検討した。得られた知見の大要は以下のとおりである。(1)集団合議への参加度・発言度はメンバー間で一様ではない。合議のプロセスは、グループの中で“認知的多数派"(cognitive majority;cf.Kameda & Ohtsubo,1995)を占めるメンバーによって占有されがちである。つまり、時系列型の知識構造をもつ者の数がグループの中で多数を占める場合には、時系列型の者が合議のプロセスを主導し、一方、証人中心型の構造をもつ者が多数派をなす場合には彼らが合議過程を占有する。(2)どちらの知識構造をもつ者がグループ内で認知的多数派を占めるかは、メンバーの証拠理解の正確さに大きな影響を与える。司法判断を行う上で適切な表象形式である時系列型が認知的多数派を占める場合にはメンバーの証拠理解は一般に促進されるが、一方、劣性の表象形式である証人中心型が多数派を占める場合には証拠理解は妨害される。以上の知見は、知識の初期共有パターンが合議過程を強く規定することを示唆している。
