本研究の終極の目的は、外来文化がホスト環境に侵入した結果に果たすであろう土着化indigenizationのメカニズムを解明し、またそれに接触した在来文化がいかなる文化変容acculturationを遂げるかを、考究することにあった。そのための端緒として、新新宗教・天道総天壇を調査研究の対象として選んだのである。天道は、清朝末期に台頭した秘密宗教・一貫道の後身であり、1949年に神戸に上陸してより着実に勢力を拡大し、現在の公称信者数は三万人を越えるものである。研究は現段階では、理論的命題を提示するに至らず、参与観察や質問紙調査によって経験的諸事実を明らかにしたに留まる。その幾つかの知見のうち、土着化と文化変容の理論構築に寄与すると思われるポイントを二、三指摘しておこう。まず、中国系信者の全信者中に占める割合である。現時点のその比率は1%に満たず、大部分が日本人である。当教団にあっては傑出した教祖的人物はおらず、理事会の合議に基く運営がなされるが、十二人の理事のうち、三人が中国系であるにすぎない(もっとも領道理事という教団トップは台湾出身であるが)。土着化にあたり、エスニシティは拘泥されないのである。次に儀礼面での変貌が著しい。中心儀礼である神託を得る儀礼では中国式の服装と礼拝様式が保存されているものの、春秋の大祭では神道式に巫女や神官が登場し、また古墳時代を思わせる装束の多数の若者が儀礼執行者として活躍する。儀礼は宗教の思想を伝達する装置であろう。当教団は土着化過程において、思想の中核部分を変形というよりむしろ変質させているかの感がある。そうであれば、土着化は埋没化の危険と隣り合わせである。さらに、教団の浅い歴史に関わらず、家族信徒が多くおり、宗教生活における家族という磁場の果たす役割が今後一層問われねばならないと考えるものである。
