本研究は「旅蒙商」などの所謂「内陸華僑」の活動を軸に形成・展開された、陸路・水路の「内陸アジア交易ネットワーク」と、そこにおける社会・文化変容の諸特徴を、現地における国際政治的な状況を踏まえて明らかにするものである。それは、文献研究を中心に構築された従前の研究成果に、現地調査により収集された様々な資料の分析結果を加えることで、当該領域における諸主体の歴史実態に対する新たな実証水準の提示と、その成果の検討を通じて、当該地域で生起しつつある21世紀の諸問題を考える上で必要となる歴史的知見の獲得も目指すものでもある。以上の研究目的に照らして令和2年度は、現地調査を実施し、新たな歴史記録の獲得を目指す予定だったが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の蔓延により現地への入国ができず、研究費を2年間繰り越して感染症の鎮静化を待ったが、結局は現地調査を断念せざるを得なくなった。このため、その代替として当初旅費として設定していた予算を以下の研究を充当し、遂行した。令和3年度は、本研究の研究協力者を中心に従前に行った現地調査の成果を持ち寄り、研究成果の再検討を行い、調査対象・内容の向上を図った。その成果に関しては、『「帝国」の秩序と再編：モンゴルの文書と史跡の探求』（日本大学文理学部史学科研究室、2022年）として刊行した通りであるが、地域間の人的・物的移動が、想定以上に活発に展開していることと、現地における政治的権威を含む文化的認識においても諸主体間における深い連関性が確認できた。また、令和4年度は、従前十分利用されたとは言い難いロシア語文献資料（Russian Military Intelligence on Asia Online:Secret Prints,1883-1914）を購入し、改めて現地社会におけるロシア側の各種活動の意図・内容の摘出・整理を図った。同作業は、現在も継続中である。
