1.15〜19世紀にかけて、南インドで大量生産されたバ-ナ劇を収集し、そのモチーフを抽出・分析した。結果的に16〜18世紀のタミルの作品が中心となった。2.この作品群は、同形式の北インドの4つのバ-ナ劇『チャトゥールバ-ニ-』を模範とするが、より広くは、遊女を主題とするサンスクリット文学作品及び性愛学・遊女学の伝統を受け継いでいる。3.一方この作品群は、そこに描かれる社会風俗と価値観の2点において、地域性・時代性を露呈する。社会風俗として、寺院の役割、遊戯や大道芸、様々な職業人・宗教者の生態、また新しい価値観として、密通を含む境界侵犯的な享楽の礼賛、放蕩する神などがうかがえる。4.この新しい価値観は、16〜18世紀の南インドの文学作品(サンスクリット語・ドラヴィダ諸語)にも共通する面があり、本来享楽と風刺を特色とするバ-ナという劇形式がこの時代に好まれた背景とみなすことができる。特にテルグ文学のアビウダヤムというジャンルは、王の享楽的な一日の出来事を遊女との情事を交えて描くものであり、筋立て、内容、王=蕩児=神という観念など当該の作品群に類似する。5.今回の研究では、当該の作品群の分析と伝統の中での位置づけを中心としたが、今後の研究では同時代の文学作品の中での時代性の検討を重視すべきであろう。また、同作品群の中でも、19世紀には享楽批判を盛り込むものも現れ、西欧的価値観の流入による変容も検討しなければならない。但し、このような研究に必要な文献の収集は国内では限界があり、今後の研究には現地での文献収集が必須である。
