项目摘要

本研究は二つの課題を設定していた。(1)瀬戸内海地域における遊女商売の実態を解明する、(2)東国における芸能興行の構造を解明する、の二点である。このうち(2)に関しては、昨年度に山梨県を対象地域とした論文と史料目録を発表したので、本年度は(1)に力点をおいて調査・研究をすすめることにした。その結果、近世・近代の豊後国(現在の大分県)の遊女集団について、芸能者集団と比較して次のような知見が得られた。近世では、遊女集団・芸能者集団ともに<集住と移動(あるいは出稼)>という形態をとるなど、多くの共通点がみられる。遊女集団が移動する範囲は、たとえば別府・浜脇の遊女は国東半島を巡廻するなど、それぞれに決まっていた。やがて近代の遊女「解放令」のもとで、両集団には大きな相違点が生じる。芸能者が「役者村」という、渡世集団=血縁集団=地縁集団の枠組みを崩さなかったのに対し、明治政府によって「解放」された遊女は、「本貫」への帰郷を奨励され、遊女集団における血縁・地縁関係は、あくまでも擬似にすぎないことが露呈したのである。しかし実際には、遊女の集住形態は解消されず、もとの遊女屋に「寄留」して渡世を続けた遊女がかなりいたため、集団の実態は近世から近代に引き継がれた。また近世の遊女商売は、大坂などに拠点をおく「旅稼」の遊女のような、集団からみれば逸脱的・周縁的存在も組み込んで成立していたのが特徴である。そうした存在によって、近代の遊女集団の枠組みも補完された形跡があり、その意味でも、近世と近代の遊女集団には連続性が認められる。
