生涯発達研究では、人生の後半生に獲得される知識の典型として「知恵(wisdom)」に注目している。知恵は人生上の問題解決能力として定義され、自分の立場を相対化する能力など、ひじょうに一般的なものとして捉えられている。しかし現状ではその存在が説得的に実証されているとは言いがたい。本研究では、従来研究のような一般的な知識に注目するのでなく、また、個々の職業に結び付いた高度の専門的知識でもなく、その中間の、ある範囲(たとえばサラリーマン一般)で共通して獲得される前提や規範に注目した。これらは、確かにその活動に従事している人々の発想や思想を縛ってはいるが、一方で一種の「コモンセンス」として適応的意義をもっていると考えられる。このような知識の中には、若者が十分に精通してはおらず、しかも有用なものがあるはずである。本研究では、知恵に関する新しい角度からの生涯発達研究の第一歩として、そのような知識の存在を示すことを目的とした。〈調査〉地方の新聞社が東京の広告元の名誉を傷つける記事を誤って掲載した事件を題材にした小説を使って、新聞社の経営陣がどのような対応をすべきかという問題を被験者に与えた。小説の結末(作者の解答)を参考にし、この種の問題に詳しい数名に相談してもっとも適切な答えを決めた。調査対象は、大学生(20代)と、50代を中心とした中年世代、及び65歳以上の世代である。結果は、大学生では全般的に成績が低かったのに対して、50代以降では高かった。但しそれは男性、つまり現役サラリーマンかその経験者に限られていた。考慮しなくてはならない要因がまだ多いが、大学生よりも中年・老年層の方が適切な答をする傾向が強いという結果が得られたことは、知恵研究の現状からすると意義が大きく、今後この方向で研究を進めていく見通しが立った。
