项目摘要

本研究は日本近代の黎明期―「明治」におけるナショナリズムの確立をめぐって、国家に対する反動として、国家と対峙しながら相補する役割を果たした明治期ロマン主義を＜感性のナショナリズム＞と銘打って、文学や絵画を素材に、その構造と系譜を解明することを企図したものである。ナショナリズム研究にあって分断されがちな「政治」と「文学」の２つの領域を架橋することの意義は大きい。既に拙著、および前回交付を受けた「挑戦的研究（萌芽）」の成果として、『日本風景論』（志賀重昂、1894年）が「鉄宕」（「sublime」の訳語）をキーコンセプトに＜崇高な吾が郷土＞を立ち上げることに寄与した文学的著述であることを提示した。今回はそれを後継する発展的研究の視座として、まず田山花袋を中心とする一大紀行文ブーム、およびその周縁に位置する大下藤次郎ら＜旅する水彩画家＞たちの存在に着目し、全国津々浦々の風景美の発見が表象としての＜吾が郷土＞を立ち上げてゆく様相を追跡した。また一方で、同じく「sublime―picturesque」系の美意識に魅了されながら、それを相対化する批評意識を発揮したと考えられる夏目漱石の言説、さらには両者を媒介する触媒としてラスキン、ひいてはワーズワースの影響を検討した。最大の成果は、花袋を要とする交友圏に及ぼした、柳田国男の影響力の大きさである。日本各地それぞれに固有の風光、なりわいを文や画に留めようとする欲求は、民俗学への萌芽を内包した初期の柳田に触発されたものであり、その頂点に位置することで分岐点をも意味することになったのが、信州の山間を生きる被差別部落民に取材した島崎藤村の名作『破戒』（1906年）である。もとより柳田の「山人」が「常民」へ糾合されてゆくのは通説の通りであり、ここに反ナショナリズムのナショナリズムとの葛藤―反動と相補の微妙な関係性の端緒を指摘することができる。
