项目摘要

今年度は、明治文学の末尾を飾る漱石文学における〈ピクチャレスク〉を検討することによって、北村透谷に始まり、志賀重昂をピークに、漱石の初期作品にまで影響を及ぼす明治期〈サブライム-ピクチャレスク〉の系譜を俯瞰することになった。その成果「風景と感性のサブライム-志賀重昂から夏目漱石まで」(裏面図書所収)の内容は以下の通り。まず、志賀重昂の『日本風景論』を、修辞・章立て・生成過程などの諸側面から検討することによって、その構造が、あたかも分析と分類に基づく〈差異の一覧表〉を形成するかのような仕組となっていることを論証した。言うまでもなく、機軸として機能しているのは自然を鑑賞の対象として超越的に眺める〈サブライム〉的審美感であり、本作のキーワード「跌宕」の特権化は、その表出である。ここに、早くに柄谷行人が論破した、まさに〈風景〉が〈内的人間〉によって発見されてゆく典型を見出すことができよう。次いで、〈サブライム〉的審美感の系譜を辿り、嚆矢に北村透谷を位置づけ、「人生に相渉るとは何の謂ぞ」「厭世詩家と女性」に、外界に優越する〈内面〉の軌跡を辿った。さらに、この転倒的内面の展開として、国木田独歩『忘れえぬ人々』に、早くも〈サブライム〉が感興・趣味の次元に閉じこめられてゆく〈ピクチャレスク〉化への変容を見た。夏目漱石の絵画小説『草枕』が、〈画になる-画にならない〉をテーマとした〈ピクチャレスク〉をめぐる物語であることは、もはや言を俟たない。注目すべきは、ここで「憐れ」に欠ける凄まじい悲愴美が「那美さん」という一人の女性に仮託されている点である。ここに、〈サブライム〉とジェンダーの捻れと葛藤という本来的な姿はようやく顕在化されたとも言え、〈サブライム〉の矮小化を、女性を画に封じ込めようとする男性知識人の優越性の崩壊と自覚的に重ね合わせ、闘争しようとする漱石文学固有の価値を見出せる。
