A Study on the Creation, Retrieval and Analysis of Full Text Databases of Documents on A-Bomb Damages

1 Together with the compilation of a comprehensive bibliography of the testimonies and witnesses of atomic bomb survivors, we have made efforts to collect documents, especially those published in the 20s of the Showa era, and finally collected or photocopied roughly 40 documents.2 Of these documents, some twenty have been computerized and made available in a form to be used for retrieval on the personal computer. In this process, we have met with a few unexpected difficulties. Many of early post-war documents we obtained had great differences between editions. So it was recognized that before the work like ours, so-called copy text or standard collated text of the documents must have been established.3 We also tried to develop computer program for the retrieval and analysis of full-text databases of the documents to be run on WINDOWS.We have not, however, been able to complete the final version of the program, and have been obliged to use the DOS version forour analysis.4 We extracted various important key concepts for an analysis of the behavior and mental state of the survivors and victims. Among them, buildings and bridges in specific location, degree and kind of injury or damage, cause of death, attitudes towards the dead (e.g.awareness of sin), are the most important for the future research. Nevertheless, we had difficulty in establishing a comprehensive framework within which to describe and analyze the realities of the atomic bomb experiences.5 Our research have not finished yet. We are going to publish results of this research, and, moreover, on the basis of this research, we will develop more effective theoretical framework for the analysis of atomic bomb experiences together with the completion of a new computer program.
