Computer-Assisted Leaning Based on Negotiation for Accordance Mediated by Multi-Dimensional Media Communication

In order for students to procedurize new concepts or new knowledge and assimilate these into their cognitive structure, computer-assisted learning (CAL) systems should mediate negotiation in a group of students and teachers in problem-solving activities.As a framework and an environment for development of CAL systems meeting these objectives, described in this report is CAFEKS (Computer-Assisted Free Exploration of Knowledge Structure) which, after several years of development, has emerged with an architeture that will greatly facilitate the design-experiment-redesign cycle.CAL systems designed on CAFEKS support above-mentioned negotiation through multi-dimensional media communication, providing responsive environment and assisting students'trial and error by way of strategy-based problem types included in the knowledge base.Also reported is ShareMedia whose prototyping has been completed and evaluation is now planned.ShareMedia supports negotiation in a objective sharing group by way of assisting navigation through retrieval, from shared media databases, of learning materials which deserve comparison.The retrieval system makes use of indices, edited by members of the group, combining primitive semantic frames from a shared repertory and anchor them to any part of the material in the media database.
