Development of Smoking Cessation Training Program for Dental Team

In order to promote smoking cessation activity in dental clinic in Japan, we have developed a smoking cessation training program. We conducted surveys in general practitioners of an alumni association of a dental school and dentists in the Japanese Medical-Dental Association for Tobacco Control (JMDATC) who have positive attitudes towards tobacco control. The survey of dentists in an alumni association showed that smoking rates (29 % in men and 2 % in women) were significantly less than those in Japanese population ; many (65 %) have asked smoking status to their patients ; 42 % of male dentists have advised their patients to quit ; and 40 % of them were aware of relationship between smoking and periodontal disease. The results indicated that Japanese dentists may play an important role in smoking intervention. Dentists in the JMDATC reported that patient resistance/complaints, amount of time required, and lack of availability of patient education materials were major barriers to incorporating smoking cessation into daily practice. Increasing awareness of periodontal disease in Japan and overcoming the barriers in the newly designed cessation program for periodontal patients could help dentists select and implement appropriate interventions to their daily practice.
