本研究では,茨城県阿見町に居住する65歳以上の高齢者全員(約5500名)を対象に悉皆調査を行い,健康に影響を及ぼす様々な要因と健康状態との関連を探った。調査は,平成8年1月〜2月に実施された。調査方法は質問紙による訪問留置法を用いた。まず,調査員が各家庭を訪問し,調査の目的を十分説明した上で調査票を配布し,約1週間後に再度訪問して回収するという手順で実施された。その結果,4939名から回答が得られた。調査票の回収率は90.5%であった。ライフスタイルと健康状態との関係を探るため,多重ロジスティック回帰分析を行った結果,いくつかの要因で有意な関連が認められた。睡眠時間が7時間よりも少ない者,あるいは9時間以上と多すぎる者では,Odds比が有意に高いことが示された。また,朝食をほとんど食べない者ではやはりOdds比は有意に高かった。同時に,運動頻度が週1回よりも少ない者のOdds比は有意に高かった。喫煙については,以前は吸っていたが現在はやめていると回答した者で,健康度が低い状況が認められた。食生活については,多くの者が野菜などをよく食べ,塩分のとり過ぎなどに気をつけ,栄養のバランスに気を配っているなど,比較的よい状態であったが,食事のメニューにバラエティがないこと,あるいは食べるのが速すぎることなど,いくつかの問題点も示された。精神的健康度(抑うつ度)は,健康に関連する様々な項目と関連が見られ,高齢者が元気で生き生きとした生活を過ごすための重要な要素であることが推定された。また,日常生活活動能力は,年齢が高くなるにしたがって明らかに低下するなど,有効な指標であることが示唆された。
