1 本研究は、明治〜昭和初期における〈学童の心身の健康〉をめぐる教育言説空間の形成を検討した。当初は、心理学者や心理学についても分析に含める予定であったが、カバーすべき文献や史料が膨大になるため、途中から、もっぱら〈学童の身体の健康〉に焦点を絞り、その言説の変容をたどることにした。その結果、大まかに二つの転換点が存在すること、そして、それぞれ、学校と地域・家庭の関係、教師と衛生や心理の専門家と学童の三者の関係について、大きな変容が生じていたことが明らかになった。2 最初の転換点は、1900年前後の学校衛生行政の制度化の時期であり、主として伝染病対策や学校の衛生状態に関する問題意識から、学校医の制度化など、「施設としての学校」と「個別の児童」が、衛生学的関心の対象になっていった。地域・家庭はまだ視野に入らず、担い手は医学関係者であった。学校空間と個別児童の身体が、衛生及び訓練の操作対象であった。3 1920年代半ば〜1930年代にもう一つの転換点があった。衛生問題の「教育」化である。そこでは、担い手が教師に移り、衛生習慣の習得や生活の改善が教育の一環として目指されることになった。一方では、都市と対比した農村の生活が、他方では中上流階級と対比した下層階級の生活が、「問題」視され、学校教育を通した家庭の変化が期待されるに至った。この転換により、学校・教師の役割が変容することになった。教師の役割は単なる知識の伝達者、徳育の遂行者の役割にとどまらず、学童の生活全体のコントロールを通した、子供-家庭-地域の幸福を実現すべきエージェントとして再定義された。学校も、同時期に制度化されていった職業指導による進路の保障機能と併せて、複合的で多機能的な装置としての位置づけを獲得していった。
