Assessment system for early senility in Down syndrome was developed. There are 5 diagnostic tools in the assessment system. We developed (1) <<Appearance-based Aging Scale>> which is designed to assesses appearance signs of aging, (2) <<Multidimensional Checklist for the Regression>> which assesses the degree of regression based on behaviours and attitudes, (3) <<Mental Status Examination>> which is designed to diagnose the degree of the deterioration of mental/cognitive functions, (4) <<Dementia Scale>> which is designed to diagnose the dementia, (5) <<Motor Behavior Checklists>> which is designed to diagnose the degree of the deterioration of motor functions. Furthermore, the applicability of those diagnostic tools were confirmed with adults with Down syndrome. Results showed that both signs of aging and a decline in mental/physical abilities begin to appear at around 40 years of age. The mean age at which the diagnosis of dementia is given is 49.6. 13 (18.8%) of subjects aged 50 years and above were diagnosed as dementia.Adults with Down syndrome were categorized as the healthy senior type, s the Alzheimer's type, and the rapid regression type.A Further revision of the tasks would be needed to make it suitable for the assessment of early senility in Down syndrome.
