Curriculum Development for Distant Collaboration between school children and Research and Development of Learning Resource Database on the Internet

One of the goals that "Informatiion Technology Education" aims is to practice a "project based" curriculum, through which students collect, process, analyze, and communicate pieces of information in existing courses. The next issue of Educational Guideline will discuss that students should be allowed to seek and solve their own tasks actively and independently. The objective of this study was to develop a practical curriculum and a support system based on the previous experiments of distant collaboration and the results of it.The project includes :(1) Development of a curriculum and tools (text, CD-ROM,Wed, Home Page)for distant collaboration with the theme, "Joint Survey of Acid Rain, and Thinking about Earthly Environment"(2) Development and integration of necessary supporting tools(3) Development of manuals for teachers(4) Implementation of the curriculum and examination of the issuesIn 1996, the curriculum was shaped for classroom implementation. The texts both for students and teachers were made ; the team also created a CD-ROM which introduces how the class proceeds to the teachers. Meanwhile, the implementation of the curriculum went on for about six months at 13 participant schools in 1996, and 25 participant schools in 1997.Then the records of collaboration (ex.email) were analyzed. The team discussed what support is necessary for joint survey, and tried to improved it.This study developed a highly practical curriculum based on the repetition (twice) of the planing, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of the curriculum. Furthermore, it suggested what support is required and what the teachers' role should be for the distant collaboration with the internet in a classroom setting. The results were presented in the report (192 pages).
