数論は、数学のあらゆる分野と密接に関連して発展し、近年では、物理学・工学等への応用も見い出されているが、本研究は、代数学、K-理論、位相幾何学等の数論への応用という総合的な見地に立って遂行された。研究代表者および分担者全員によって、(1)関連部門の研究集会等への参加・討論(2)関連部門の研究者との緊密なる研究連絡・研究打ち合わせ(3)資料・文献の調査・収集・整理(4)コンピューターをもちいた解析を行った。特に、代数学の数論への応用という観点においては、ガウスの和・ヤコビの和の研究の重要性がますます認識されてきて、研究代表者が従来より行ってきたガウスの和・ヤコビの和に関するいくつかの研究をさらに発展させていく見通しを得た。すなわち、研究代表者によってこれまで得られた主な結果は(1)岩沢の合同式および伊原の合同式の一般化とその応用(2)Jacobiの和の作るHecke指標の導手の決定(Weilの問題の解決)(Coleman-McCallumによる結果の数論的証明とl=2のときの解決)(3)(1)の方法によるGaussの和、Jacobiの和を補間する伊原のべき級数Andersonのべき級数の存在証明および明示公式(4)Jacobiの和に関する塩田徹治氏の問題のl部分の肯定的解決(5)素数l分体のイデアル類群のl部分のi(奇数)部分が巡回群であろうという長手の予想(岩沢の主予想にかんするMazur-Wilesの結果をこえるもの)があるが、それが成立するための新しい判定条件をヤコビの和を用いることにより与えることに成功した。その判定条件を用いて、1+2lまたは1+4lが素数の場合にはその予想が成立することを証明した。またその巡回群の生成元についても分かった。この予想を条件なしに一般的に証明することは今後の問題であるが、上の結果は巡回群の生成元についての見通しを初めて与えるものである。
