Along the original plan of my research, I list up the main results below ;(1998)For constructing a database I chose 2 Japanese editions to Dell'arte della guerra, 4(5) to Il principe, and 2(3) to Discorsi. The number in two parentheses is what I planned at the beginning, but I was not able to complete my own translations except Dell'arte della guerra. The original texts were based on the electric book, LIZ2.0 (Letteratura Italiana Zanichelli, 1995), referring especially to Le grandi opere politiche I・II, Boringhieuri, 1992-3. This year was assigned to the task for the optical reading and recognizing the Japanese texts.(1999)The same task was continued of another two works, Il principe and Discorsi., but not done. While the original text and the Japanese translations (by Hamada and by Hattori) were divided into every sentence instead of a paragraph as an unit for easy reference with a serial number.(2000)This final year, focussing on "arte/i" in the first book of Dell'arte della guerra, I examined and studied its significance, which seems to me essential to lead us to a total understanding of the thoughts of Machiavelli. To be brief his "arte/i" does not mean a mere <technique> nor <method>. It was rather revealed that the term holds Machiavelli's <ethics> attached to the profession of the politics. So at least considering how the title of this book should be translated into Japanese, I dared to propose "Senso-shokugyou-ron ("Discourse on the war as a profession").Thus it is true that the term "arte/i" is no less important than the well-known ones, i.e.<virtu> and <fortuna> to face up to the wisdom alive in the whole thoughts of Machiavelli. Finally I prepared CD-ROM with the trial database that enables to make confront simultaneously with each sentence among the several Japanese editions of Dell'arte della guerra (by which you can get an experience of the contents of the Proemio and the Libro 1) just through inputting the sentence-number.
