音楽作品を構成する要素のうち、「空間性」として指摘できるものの様態、呈示方法、作品形態との関係などに関して研究を進め、以下のような知見を得た。1.中世において、とりわけゴシック建築において空間構成に支配的な比率は、古代ギリシャ時代から形を変えて伝えられてきた音階のための比率と深い関係にある。この一般的な見解に関し、特に、七自由学科に含まれていた音楽の視点から考察した。更に、理論との矛盾が自覚され始めた、当時の音楽実践とその実践が行われていた場所との関係を整理し、理論面、実践面、両面での建築と音楽の関係を考察し、中世における音楽の空間性について明らかにした。2.戦後日本の前衛音楽は、黎明期から1970年の大阪万博にかけて、とりわけテクノロジーとの関わりを深めていったが、なかでも「実験工房」と「草月コンテンポラリー・シリーズ」は、異分野芸術や産業界と音楽実践の繋がりを密接に計った点において注目すべき事例である。そうした交流が、作品にどのように影響を与え、また、作品には昇華されないどのような芸術環境となって受容されていったかを明らかにした。具体的には、視覚芸術の分野で空間や環境の概念が注目された1950〜60年代の音楽について考察した。3.フランスにおける音の環境デザインを、歴史、現状の両面において調査した。(1)電子音響音楽の創始者ピエール・シェフェールの業績と後代への影響を第一次資料に立ち返って調査した。(2)電子芸術国際シンポジウム(パリ)に参加し、そこでの議論を発展させて、視覚的要素と音楽要素との心理的関わりに関する実験を行い、空間認知についての視聴覚相互作用について考察した。
