この研究では、ヒトの言語、小鳥の歌、チンパンジーの道具使用の研究に関する文献を収集・整理し、それぞれの行動の習得における臨界期の性質を、種を超えて比較することによって、言語の生物学的基礎を解明することを試みた。しかしながら、臨界期に関する研究は予想以上に多く、この報告は中間報告的な性質を持つものであることを付け加えたい。言語習得における臨界期の概念は、Lenneberg1967によって初めて主張された時から、生得的な言語能力の仮定と結びついていた。その後、野性児の言語習得、第二言語や手話の習得の研究に基づいて言語習得における臨界期の存在の経験的な証拠が報告された。しかし、他種の行動の発達にみられる臨界期の特徴と比較すると、臨界期は領域固有の動と不可分の関係にはないことが解った。まず、一般的な学習能力によって学習される文化的な行動と思われる野性チンパンジーの道具使用行動においても臨界期が存在することが報告されている。(e.g.Matsuzawa1994)これは、臨界期が特定の領域に固有の性質をもつ生得的な能力の発達のみに関わる現象ではないことを示唆している。また一方で、小鳥の歌の学習は、遺伝的に組み込まれた行動パターンであると考えられるが、種によって臨界期の存在や時期や長さがさまざまに変異していることが報告されている。(e.g.Marler1990)これは、遺伝的に組み込まれた行動と臨界期との関係が比較的独立していることを示唆している。最後に、この研究は、侵襲的な実験ができないヒトの言語の生物学的基礎を研究するためにはヒトの言語と他の種の行動とを、臨界期のような指標を基礎として比較するという方法論が非常に有用であることを示唆していると言える。

This research is aimed at collecting, collating and analyzing the literature related to the study of speech, bird songs and the use of human tools, as well as clarifying the nature of the critical period for the acquisition of human behavior. The research on critical period is based on the above analysis, and the nature of the report is based on the analysis. The concept of critical period of speech acquisition was originally advocated by Lenneberg in 1967. This paper reports the evidence of the existence of critical periods in the study of speech acquisition, second speech acquisition and manual speech acquisition in post-natal and wild children.
