This year's research schedule encompassed the following three research directions :1. A research survey on the actual condition of the state of cemeteries in Sendai CityField surveys were conducted on both Sendai municipal cemeteries and privately managed cemeteries, as well as Buddhist and Catholic cemeteries located within Sendai city limits.2. Associated material collection of other regionsResearch material was gathered from Kyoto, Yokohama, Tokyo and other areas to ascertain the actual condition of graves that differ from the normative family grave type. Particular attention was focused on the collective grave wherein a group of non-specified deceased individual's remains are commonly interned.Based on the fact that the use of geomancy is sometimes seen in Sendai's privately managed cemeteries when constructing graves, an interview type survey was performed with individuals from a Kyoto gravestone maker's business and others who offer grave geomancy services to customers.3. Construction of a database of grave system related literatureJapan's research on the grave system has a lengthy history. Moreover, in recent years it has not only been the human social sciences but also the natural sciences or from interdisciplinary fields that research has actively been undertaken. Nonetheless, material that grasped the whole aspect of these fields combined research was until the present unavailable. It was towards this purpose that a database was constructed which incorporating scientific journals, research handbooks, general magazines and the like could reach a wide audience.A summary report listing the results of the above research point was subsequently published
