The aim of this study was to evaluate working conditions using notebook personal computers, in order to prevent visual and musculoskeletal disorders. Four kinds of experiments of VDT (Visual Display Terminals) operations were carried out.The first experiment was to evaluate viewing conditions using with a notebook personal computer and a desktop personal computer. The display of the notebook personal computers would allow a comfortable downward gaze than the desktop personal computers from the vertical eye position viewpoint.The second experiment was to evaluate the work posture while using the notebook personal computers and desktop personal computers. Significant differences in both experimental conditions were seen with viewing distance, viewing angle and head angle. The characteristic features of the work posture using the notebook personal computers were a remarkably short viewing distance and a forward inclination of the head. The value of integrated electromyogram of the neck muscle was greater while using the notebook personal computers than when using the desktop personal computers.The third experiment was to evaluate the addition of a mechanism for adjustment of the height of the notebook personal computer. The height of the display, 90-100cm, would allow a comfortable downward gaze and correct posture. The work posture became a more upright head and neck position using this adjustable display.The final experiment was to consider how to use the flat panel display for various types VDT operations. The recommendation for comfortable VDT operation using the flat panel display, to adjust the display height for the each operator's height sitting down.
