This research revealed the difference between theme and focus particles in modem spoken Japanese and their counterparts in modern written Japanese, analyzing several particles such as "tte," "datte," "nanka," and zero-particles, which have seldom been researched.The results are shown in the six papers below contained in the research results report. The first two papers are about theme, the next three are about focusing, and the last one are about peripheral form of focusing.(1) "Tte" Presenting a Theme: An Aspect of Thematic Sentences with "tte" (Takahashi, Minako)(2) How a Theme Operates on Subject-predicate Structures and Adnominal Modification Structures: Describing Attributes in Spoken Japanese (Sawada, Hiroko)(3) The Function and Meaning of Focus Particle, "datte," in Spoken Japanese (Nakanishi, Kumiko)(4) Focus Particle, "nanka," to Express So-called Derogation (Nakanishi, Kumiko)(5) Presentative Focusing in Modem Japanese (Noda, Hisashi)(6) Usage of "toka" in Modern Japanese (Lee, Jangmi)In addition, we recorded and transcribed natural speech, and contained the 36 text data in a CD-ROM as an appendix of the research result report. This data is useful not only for the research on theme and focus particles but various kinds of research about spoken Japanese.
