1.調査項目を焦点化するための文献レビュー更年期女性の孫育て、育児期にある母親のサポート等をキーワードとした。その結果、妊娠期、分娩期、育児期にある母親達が実母または義母といった更年期女性を最も重要なサポート源であると認識していること、そのサポート内容が育児の手伝いや相談相手などの実質的サポートを中心に、多岐にわたっていることが明らかになった。一方、更年期女性の側から、次世代へのサポートの実態やサポート提供に関する思いを明らかにした研究は見当たらなかった。サポート者への援助として祖父母学級等の育児指導が行われていたが、更年期女性のニーズを明らかにしないまま、新しい育児方法を伝授しているのにとどまっていた。2.研究対象の設定文献検討を通して導き出された現代社会におけるニーズを鑑み、本研究の対象者を初めての出産・育児を経験する女性とその実母とした。さらに、実母が最も重要なサポートパーソンであり、日常的に何らかの接触を持てる関係にある母子に限定した。3.主要概念の定義「母性行動」は、わが子の健やかな成長発達を目的とした養育的行動と、「継承」は、言動による意図的な伝達と定義した。4.予備調査データ収集に使用する面接ガイドと観察リストを作成するための予備調査を行った。予備調査では、母性継承の内容や方法、母性継承に対する更年期女性と娘の評価を把握した。同時に、母性継承に影響する要因を抽出した。予備調査結果の一部を学会で発表した。
