SPIRALはインターネット上における知的情報統合のためのサブシステムであり,WWWのシームレスな利用環境である.SPIRALでは,ユーザが訪れたWEBページをすべてデータベースに保存する.SPIRALシステムにより与えられたメニューを用いることで,現在見ているページあるいは見られなくなったページの過去の時点での内容がデータベース中に保存されていれば,それにアクセスすることが可能となっていた.一方,SPIRALには,C4.5を用いた学習モジュールの統合が行われており,SPIRALデータベース中に格納された同一URLを持つコンテンツを時間的にまとめて一つの訓練事例とすることが可能な機構の実装も行われてきた.本研究では,学習モジュールを用いて,データベース中に蓄えられたアクセス履歴から,それらの時間的変化を考慮した知的情報アクセス技術の獲得を行うため,SPIRALシステムの学習に関連したモジュールに関して,プログラミング言語Java及びC5を用いることによるシステムの再設計,再実装,機能拡張を行った.既存のSPIRALシステムでは,実装言語としてPrologを主に使ってきていたが,本研究成果により,時間変化を考慮した知的情報アクセス技術の獲得に関して,小規模実験程度しか対応できなかったSPIRALシステムのプロトタイプから,中・大規模実験に対応できるプロトタイプシステムとすることができた.
