项目摘要

昨年にひきつづき、1920年代の建築家、特に有機主義と結びつくと思われる建築家について、資料の収集、文献調査などを行った。特にアメリカのアリゾナ州、フェニックス近郊にあるフランク・ロイド財団(タリアセン・ウエスト)に赴き、ライトに関する図面などの一次資料にふれることができたことが大きな収穫であった。そこには中国や日本の伝統文化から影響をうけたと思われるオリエンタリズム(東洋趣味)にあふれる図面類を多数発見できた。それらはいまだ十分に研究されたものではなく、日本にも建築作品を残したライトの建築理念を探る一級の資料となった。また、ライト晩年の約10年間の設計活動をともにした、当財団の館長・Pfeiffer氏からライトの設計手法などについてお話をうかがい、ライトが現代の建築界に与えた影響について議論することができた。そこから、ライトは中国や日本などの影響を受け、東洋的な表現手法としてグリッドの構成などを自らの建築に取り入れる一方で、西洋的思考方法を貫くことで、建築における西洋と東洋を統合する試みを行ったことがわかった。昨年調査を行ったドイツの近代建築家、ハンス・シャローンやフーゴー・ヘーリングも東洋(特に中国)の住宅や町や建設技術から影響を受けており、それが、単なる表現主義にとどまらない有機的な建築につながる大きな要因となっていることがわかった。今後はシャローンやヘーリングとライトを比較分析してゆくことで、20世紀初頭の近代建築における有機主義について理解を深め、今までの形式美学に基づく近代建築史の記述に一石を投じることが可能となろう。さらに、同時代の日本の建築家についての調査も行った。日本におけるモダン・ムーブメントを担った分離派建築会の活動について、残存する建築を見てまわり、また図面の閲覧やその複写、資料の収集などを行った。これらはさらに今後の分析を必要とするが、シャローンやライトなどと比較してゆくことで、より多面的に近代建築の側面を発見することができるであろう。そのことによって、今後、近代建築史の再編纂が可能になるはずである。
