本研究の目的は、都市を「土地の集合体」としてとらえ、個々の土地の具体的変遷史としての都市研究を行なうことにあった。対象とするものとして寺院集合地域をとり上げ、基礎的情報の収集につとめた。考察の対象地域は、1上野公園(旧寛永寺境内),2浅草(旧浅草寺境内),3牛込市ヶ谷(横寺町,通寺町),4向丘(文京区)を念頭におき、必要に応じて谷中・麻布などその他の寺院集合地域を参照する形をとった。調査の形態は1.基礎的情報の収集,2.明暦大火後・幕末期・明治初期・市区改正後の、4期の後原図の作成,3.大正以降の寺院移転,消滅についての追跡調査を主眼としたが、中でも1および3が作業の中心となった。1については該当地域の調査・巡見にもとづいて,現状の構成要素(建築・塀・庭園・墓地など)を記録していった。この作業のなかで、檀家系列、旧藩関係の寺院および明治以降の有力商人と寺院の関係を中心としたデ-タ収集が行なわれた。その結果、寺院の性格が幕末から明治以降にかけてどのように変化したかを、檀家層から解明するという方法の端緒をつかむに至った。この作業を逆転させ、鍋島家、島津家等を中心にして、当主および家臣団の墓地の所在および寺院分布を調査し、大正期以降の寺院移転・消滅の追跡を行なうことが可能になった。東京における寺院の存在基盤と存在意義を、檀家層から捉え直すことが、近代における都市内寺院の動きを把握する上で有効なのである。
