项目摘要

本研究は日本近世都市空間を、地理情報システム(GIS)という分析手法を用いて明らかにすることを目的とした。都市空間史の研究は文献史学・地理学・建築史学などといった広汎な学際的領域であるが、本研究は文献史学と地理学の学際に限定した。両者のアプローチにより、近世都市空間をより総合的に分析することが可能となった。特にGISを用いた都市空間史分析を文献史学の視点から捉え直そうということは日本では初めての試みであった。本研究では、対象を江戸周辺地域=近世的「首都圏」に求めた。「首都圏」とは近代の概念ではあるが、日本近世においては以下の三つを指標とした。1.政治的指標;江戸周辺地域における知行地の分布。幕府直轄領・旗本領・大名領・寺社領の分布。2.経済的指標;江戸向けの商品生産地の分布。野菜・根菜・海産物・織物・醤油・石灰など。3.社会的指標;通婚圏、労働力移動、参詣旅行などの人の移動。以上のような文献史学から考えられる「首都圏」を地理的に把握できるかが具体的な課題であった。これらの課題の解決のため、具体的な作業としては以下のことを行った。まず、「武蔵国天保国絵図』(国立公文書館蔵)のフィルムを購入し、デジタル化した。この絵画史料情報から、河川の走り方といった自然地理的情報、さらに街道の走り方、衛星都市(宿場町・河岸・港町)の分布状況・地理的位置関係といった人文地理的情報を地理情報システムによって解析した。また、人文地理的データとして、19世紀前半の『新編武蔵国風土記稿』に記載されている各村の領域の広さ、石高、戸数・寺院神社数などを地理情報システムに入力した。さらに明治10年『共武政表』(兵部省)における戸数・人口、官公署・寺院・神社・牛馬・車両・船舶などの数値データも入力した。以上のデータ分析の結果、地理学の立場(研究分担者:ローレン・シーバート)からは平面的空間構造を明らかにし、文献史学の立場(研究代表者:渡辺浩一)からは空間構造の社会的特質について解明した。
