表記研究の前提として,川口は大宰府の成立を分担した.後漢・光武帝の下賜した金印は,「漢委奴国王」の奴国の地=博多湾地域が東アジア世界=中国・朝鮮と倭の地理的な接点であることを端的に示す。その後の王権の展開(大王→天皇)に対応して,博多湾地域には「那津官家」が設置され、さらに「筑紫大宰」派遣の段階を経て、白村江の敗戦後,現在の地に移転して築かれたのが大宰府である。この大宰府はまさにオホイミコトモチノツカサとして、天皇=スメラミコトの成立に対応するものと考える。この私見から,天皇号成立の直前(斉明朝)における王宮周辺の外交施設に着目し,奈良県明日香村の石神遺跡の現地を調査した。文献の記述とも合わせて、そこには石母田正のいう「天皇と諸蕃」の原型が伺える。一方,大宰府の鴻臚館遺跡の現地調査では最近の発掘成果にも接した。朴は,渤海と統一新羅の対日外交の実体究明を分担した。渤海と統一新羅は唐に対する朝貢外交の一方で,互いの牽制のために日本に対する様々な外交を展開した。朴はその外交の多様な側面(実利的な交易から軍事同盟にも至る)の解明を試みた。8世紀における大宰府の外交・軍事的意義を再度,確認した上で、8世紀中頃の渤海と大宰府の接触の意味を考察する。渤海使節の来航は航海上の条件から大宰府ではなく,北陸道一帯とならざるをえなかったが,その唯一の対馬寄港の事例が,藤原仲麻呂の新羅征討計画に深く関連したものであることを解明した。一方の新羅の対日外交に関しては,在唐の新羅商人である張宝高の大宰府交易の実体を中心にして論じ,9世紀前半の張宝高の大宰府交易の前後の新羅と渤海の対日外交の変化を明快に位置付けた(この朴の研究の端は、國學院大学史学科主催の国際研究会議「古代東アジアの国家と異文化交流」で発表された)。

For example, Fujiwara Nakamaro's plan to attack Silla was deeply related to the conditions of the sea voyage. A study on the relationship between Silla and Japan was carried out at the center of the Tang Dynasty's Silla merchants 'exchange with Zhang Baogao's government, and the relationship between Silla and Japan's foreign relations with Bohai Sea before and after Zhang Baogao's government exchange in the first half of the 9th century.
