平成14年度は、ユニットケアに取り組む特別養護老人ホームの介護職員の視線から見た具体的な介護場面を記録・分析し、施設のケア方針、サービス種別、空間条件がどのように具体的にその質に影響するのか明らかにし、入居高齢者の視線からみた高齢者施設の居住環境評価を行うため、CCDカメラと小型マイクを介護職員に装着し、入居者-職員間のコミュニケーションを分析した。その結果、1)記録された会話にはCCD調査自体に関する会話がやや目立つというデータが示された。これは調査がある意味非日常的な介護状況を作ったという調査手法上の限界も指摘されるが、言い換えればCCD調査のような、介護職員あるいは利用者にとっていつもとは異なる要素が外部から入ってくる、つまり日常にちょっとした変化が起きると、そのことをきっかけとして自然な形で会話が盛り上がることを示しており、利用者と豊かなコミュニケーションを図るためには、施設生活に非日常的要素が入ることで実現することを示唆している。2)CCD調査に関する会話を除けば・天気やテレビの話など、やや変化に乏しいものが目立ったが、3)中には利用者あるいは介護職員自身の身に付けている衣服・装飾品などを話題にする場面も見られ、衣服や装飾品に限らず、利用者あるいは介護職員の日々の生活背景が垣間見えるような話題づくりは、お互いの信頼を高めていく上で有効なことが示唆された。以上の研究から、介護職員に求められているのは、礼儀や言葉遣いなどの介護の基本的な姿勢はもちろんであるが、もうひとつのステップとして、さらに介護職員自身の個性が必要なこと、一方、画一的なケア教育を貫くあまり、介護職員が皆一様に没個性的なパーソナリティに陥ることは、ともすれば利用者との豊かなコミュニケーション、信頼しあえる関係づくりの弊害になりかねないなど、入居者-職員間のコミュニケーション特性について考察を行った。
