本研究は、マー語系に属するケニア中北部の牧畜民サンブルをおもな対象として、物質文化と商品経済の相互関係、およびその歴史的変遷を、彼らの思考様式の側から捉えることを目指す人類学的研究である。平成15年度は、平成16年1月1日から2月22日にかけて、ケニアに海外出張し、サンブルを対象とした調査研究を実施することが出来た。昨年度調査においては、ロロキ郡、バラゴイ郡、ワンバ郡において選択した各世帯を対象として、物質文化の広域サーヴェイを実施したが、本年度も同じ世帯を訪問して、その補充調査を行った。また。サンブルの家屋における廃物利用状況を分析するために、バラゴイ群において、特定家屋の建材全点にナンバリングを行い、その建材の入手元をインタビュー調査した。さらに、サンブル県内の廃物利用と修繕技術に関する広域調査を実施し、プラスチック修理師、鍛冶師、木工師、タイヤシューズ職人などに民俗技術の実演を依頼し、マルチメディア資料として記録した。以上の調査の結果、廃物利用と修繕技術が、植民地期以降のサンブルの物質文化のなかに極めて大きな割合を占めていることが解明できた。とりわけ、プラスチック修理師、鍛冶師、タイヤシューズ職人らは、サンブルが遊動の際に集落跡に残していった使用済みの商品(ポリタンク、鍋等)や自動車の部品(バッテリー、古タイヤ)の廃物利用を前提とした技術を熟成しており、彼らが用いる使用道具も、また廃物利用によって自作したものが多いことがわかった。彼ら専門の職人の技術は、それ以外の人々にも模倣され、商品経済と密接に結びついた現在のサンブルの新物質文化を形成していったと考えられる。今後は、サンブルの経済観や物質認知様式等の広範な社会文化的事象と上記成果を照合する作業を進め、廃物利用の豊饒性を提示することによって、従来の人類学における「貧困の文化」論を見直すことを企画している。
