本研究の主目的は、日本・琉球・朝鮮・ヨーロッパの史料を総合的に分析し、東アジアにおける中世末期〜江戸初期の日本の文化的、技術的、政治的な発展の研究、及びそれをを通じて行う諸国史料に見える日本関係の用語の比較を行い正確な英訳を検討するという中世歴史用語・歴史語彙の英語への翻訳基準の研究、およびそれらの電子情報化などによって日本史研究の一層の国際化を目指すことである。本年度は、以下の研究に従事した。1 中世・近世の日本・琉球の国際関係史の研究1)中世の九州の守護大友氏の研究、その研究から発展した日本と東アジアとの国際関係の研究を進め、著書原稿を作成、奴隷、木綿交易、琉球国などについての論文を執筆した。2)Journal of Japanese Studies誌に'Japan in the Life of Early Ryukyu'を投稿した。3)Professor Mass記念誌に'The Early Shugo in Kyushu'を投稿した。これは、中世九州の大友氏の研究である。2003年6月21日、米国・アジア研究協会AAS日本支部ASCJ第7回大会(上智大学)で'The Genin Within the Medieval Japanese Warrior Clan'と題する発表を行った。4)"The International Journal of Asian Studies"に'The Cotton Trade between Japan and Korea'という論文執筆を依頼され執筆した。また、2004年2月14日、第14回「東アジア異文化間交流史研究会セミナー」(国学院大学)において「17世紀日本町を通して見た東南アジアの政治と社会」ついて発表した。2003年11月、米国・南カリフォーニア大学で、また同年同月、ニュージーランド・オークランド大学で行われたNZAsia会議にて'Japan in the Life of Early Ryukyu'の報告を行った。5)著書"Japanese Foreign Settlement to 1650"(英国・Taylor Francis社)は現在、審査中。6)Monumenta Nipponica"掲載予定の'Slavery in Medieval Japan'は現在、印刷中。2 本古代・中世歴史用語・歴史語彙の英語への翻訳基準の研究1)前近代日本の史料遺産プロジェクトの日本史グロッサリー研究に参加した。『日本荘園史』1(吉川弘文館)に収録される中世荘園関係用語の英訳を行った。2)2003年8月27日、ヨーロッパ日本学会(EAJS)2003年大会(ワルシャワ)で'0n-line glossary of Japanese Historical Terms'と題して、日本史グロッサリーデーターベースの紹介を行った。

The main purpose of this study is to analyze the historical materials of Japan, Ryukyu, Korea, Japan, study the cultural, technological and political development of Japan from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the Yangtze River, and to communicate with each other. On June 21, 2003, the 7th ASCJ Conference of the Japan Branch of the American Association for Scientific Research (AAS)(Sochi University) was held on the theme "The Genin Within the Medieval Japanese Warrior Clan." 4)"The International Journal of Asian Studies" in 'The Cotton Trade between Japan and Korea'. February 14, 2004, 14th edition of "The History of Intercultural Communication in the East"(Kokugakuin University). In November 2003, a report on "Japan in the Life of Early Ryukyu" was presented at the NZAsia Conference. 5)The book "Japanese Foreign Settlement to 1650"(Taylor Francis) is currently under review. 6)Monumenta Nipponica"Revealed to be 'Slavery in Medieval Japan' now, in print. 2. Study on the English Translation of Ancient and Middle Ages Historical Terms 1) Study on Japanese Historical Materials and Heritage of Pre-modern Japan "History of Japanese Garden" 1(Yoshikawa Hirofumi Museum) 2)2003 On August 27, 2003, EAJS held its 2003 General Assembly (WISH) on the topic of '0n-line glossary of Japanese Historical Terms'.
