本研究は近年目覚しく進展した中世都市研究の中で、考古学的研究の著しく遅れている奈良について、基礎資料の整理をとおしてその実態を明らかにしようというものである。研究の概要としては、文献の収集を通した研究史の把握、これまで行われている発掘調査事例の集成、分布図の作成を中心に研究を行った。これらの作業の結果、250に及ぶ関連研究文献を集成、730箇所の発掘調査事例をデータベース化することができた。これら一連の基礎作業を通じて、まず中世都市奈良成立以前の状況として、平安遷都後の平城京域が9世紀後半ごろまである程度維持管理されていたこと、平城京外京は地形的制約からその土地利用について非常に不安定な状態にあったことが明らかとなった。このことは中世都市奈良が平城京の延長に存在するものではないということを示す。次に中世都市奈良を特徴付ける寺院勢力の動向であるが、やはり興福寺・東大寺・元興寺の門前地域に10世紀頃から遺構が展開し始める。しかし従来都市成立の大きな画期とされていた治承4年の平家による南都焼き討ちは考古資料からは不明瞭で、むしろ13世紀後半の興福寺を背景にした律宗による都市整備が都市形成の画期と考えられる。中世から近世への移行期、都市構造の大きな変化として、元興寺旧境内内部の都市化が挙げられる。現在「ならまち」として観光地化されている都市域はこの時期に形成される可能性が高い。また、奈良に存在する中小規模寺院についても調査を行った結果、これらの多くが寺院境内墓地を持ち、それまで都市縁辺部であった傾斜地に立地する事が判明した。これについては中世末の都市民の成長と、旧来勢力に拘泥されない葬送地の展開が背景に存在したものと考えられる。これらの成果を報告書としてまとめ、刊行を行った。
