The damage of the gears brings the large economic loss, and has the risk of causing the accident which involves the human lives. Thus the risk management of the gears is extremely important. On the other hand, in order to decrease the energy consumption, the power transmission gear system is required to be the downsizing and the long-term reliability. To estimate the probability of damage of the gears is indispensable for this purpose.In this research, the following project was carried out for a term of 3 years since 2004 in order to apply the risk management to the design of the carburized gears.・Developing a simulation method to estimate the fatigue strength based on distribution of the inclusions.・Validation of a simulation method based on the fatigue tests of the gears.・Establishing a method for the estimation and assuring the allowable stress of the carburized gears in consideration of the probability of damage.To achieve above subjects, the various research were carried out from the broad view points, and following result were obtained.・Estimation of P-S-N curves in view of the reliability design of the carburized gears.・Quantitative evaluation of the strain near the tooth fillet by an image processing・Development of the fatigue strength simulation in the reliability design of the carburized gears.・Development of the surface durability simulation considering the distribution of the inclusions.
