项目摘要

この研究は、ローマ帝政期の修辞学と文学の関係を、議会で行われる弁論を主な対象として、明らかにすることを試みるものである。この時代の修辞学は、相手を説得するための弁論を作り出すという本来の役割を離れ、文学を書く方法論としての機能を帯びるに至った。一方、歴史や詩を書く者は修辞学によって教育されていたため、これらの文学作品の中にはそれの大きな影響が見られる。この研究では歴史書や詩の中に現れる弁論を対象とすることで、一つの視点から両者のこの時代の関係を総合的に記述する。とりわけ、歴史書の中で重要な役割を果たしている議会弁論を主要な対象とする。この分野は既に実用的な価値が薄れていたため、修辞学と文学との関係をより明確に表現しているからである。本年の研究では、これまでの研究を発展させ、歴史や弁論と関わりの深い、ワレリウス・マクシムスという作家の逸話集を研究した。この著作は、歴史的な人物・出来事を扱った逸話を集成したものであると同時に、極めて修辞学的な文章の見本としての価値を持ち、ローマ帝政期において修辞学がいかに歴史やその他の題材を利用して、独自の作品を生み出していったかを明らかにするのに適した研究対象であった。特に、その執筆目的に関する議論を取り上げて集中的に検討を加え、この著作が修辞学的な目的を持って書かれたとする説と倫理的教育目的を持ってたという両説の比較を行い、両者を統一しうるような新たな視点を呈示した。
