In order to investigate human mechanism on multimodal perception/memory and application to early diagnosis system for dementia disease, we have measured human characteristics on visual, auditory and tactile perception and attention, memory and language higher functions by behavior, EEG and fMRI experiments. The important results can summary as follows.The visual behavior experimental results may suggested that the visual circular vection (CV) to be more compelling when the spatial frequency from 0.053cycle/deg to 0.084 cycle/deg and high luminance of visual stimuli in central vision field. We developed the wide-view visual presentation system with a horizontal visual angle of 120 deg and a vertical angle of 120 deg using nonmagnetic optical fibers and contact lens for fMRI. In this paper, we introduce the functions and performance of this system and report the results of our evaluative experiment.Auditory experimental results suggested that the effect of the earplug on sound localizati … More on ability had two causes, sound insulation and spectral change.We developed a novel automatic tactile pattern delivery system that is capable of perform the tactile cognitive and neuroimaging procedures. The results indicated that the performance of active and passive touch depend on the similar rate of the tactile patterns. Human raised angle discrimination was increased as the standard angular was increased when the standard angular was smaller than 90°. The raised angle discrimination ability was at a same level, when the standard angular was larger than 90°.The brain-imaging data showed a partial overlap between visual spatial attention and auditory spatial attention. In addition, it revealed a partial overlap between the neural systems involved in the performance of visual spatial attention versus visual temporal attention. Function segregation in the left inferior frontal gyrus was investigated in an fMRI experiment using a passive listening task, in which Japanese subjects were required to passively listen to words and nonsense words in Japanese and English.The above basic research results providing basic dada to develop the early diagnosis system for dementia disease.
