第二次世界大戦前に人種偏見から米国で排除され、ブラジル主要部でも圧迫されて新大陸に目的地を失いかけた日本人移民を、地域開発の切札として最後に迎え入れた土地がアマゾンであった。彼らは過酷な環境の下、地域の食糧供給を安定させ、国際市場で通用する特産作物を育てて受入れ側の期待に応えた。本研究では、自由移住百年、公式移住八十年を経たブラジルアマゾン日系人の農業活動を、「森をつくる農業」として知られるアグロフォレストリーに着目して実態調査した。
