This study aims to provide teaching materials of Japanese music based on its traditional characteristics which are orality, variability, gradual transformation, unification of composing and playing and integration with other expressive media. The result reports are summarized as follows.Part 1: To suggest the curriculum of Japanese music based on above characteristics, and to define educational contents focusing on the structure of Japanese music and its context.Part 2: To present the basic idea for designing class-work of listening and performing in primary and secondary schools, giving four cases teaching principally music structure (pulse, pattern, ornament). To analyze two cases of process of students' music making, one was based on the theory of J. Dewey's “occupation" and the other was used heterophony, melodic pattern, formand so on.Part 3: To describe three kinds of possibilities of learning of Japanese music in lifelong learning and teacher training from the viewpoints of a musician or two composers. Those are transmission/creation of Japanese folk song, the reading drama with music based on a Japanese traditional subject “Adachi-ga-hara" and music making played by Japanese traditional instruments through the technique of contemporary music. Finally surveying the improvement of the new curriculum standards, we indicate the possibilities of music education reflecting the linguistic and physical characteristics of Japanese music.
