项目摘要

本研究の最終年度となる平成19年はこれまでの研究成果のまとめが中心となった,関連する文献の整理をし、これまで発表・出版してきた研究成果を改めて今回の「研究成果報告書」として出版した。併せて、特別編集委員として招かれたConcentric誌の編集作業を進め、2008年には無事出版予定である。これまでの研究成果をまとめると以下のようになる。海をめぐる文学とは入間と海環境との関わりについての文学である。海環境の物理的様相に併せて表現様式やテーマに一貫した特徴が見られることによって、そのことは明らかになった。19世紀アメリカ社会では、技術の発展や維済基盤の変化が急速に進み、人々の海環境への関わり方も多様化しそして「大衆化」した時代であった。これまでの経済・商業の場に加え、「娯楽の場」として海と関わることによって、多様な海の文学が生まれていくことになった。19世紀アメリカの海の文学の状況とは、すなわち、それまでに海について書かれていた戦記、航海、冒険といった既存のジャンルが書かれなくなっていく一方で、新たな大衆レベルの海との関係が構築され、そして文学作品に反映されていったということなのである。つまり、19世紀のアメリカで海をめぐる作品が少なくなっていったのではなく、また、ジオセントリズムが海環境の価値観を淘汰したのでもない。海をめぐろ文学作品は以前よりも多様化し、様々なアメリカ文化の諸相を表現していくことになるのである。これまでの研究成果によって明らかになってきたアメリカの海の文学の多様性が、20世紀を迎え、どのように表現されていくのか、どのようなテーマが生まれ、そして、同時代の有名作家や作品たちとの関連はいかなるものであったのか。19世紀アメリカの海の文学についての基礎的研究において得られた成果と比較検討することによって、これらの問いに答えるのがこれからの研究の課題である。
