本研究は北海道における士族屯田兵の事例を中心に、彼らが移住の際に母村から持ち込んだ墓標等の文化を考古学的に実測・調査し、彼らの物質文化に見られる母村からの影響、士族的な特徴や平民屯田との比較から見た階層性、移住の前後での変容等を明らかにすることを目的とする。研究の最終年度に当たる平成19年度は北海道伊達市営尾幌内墓地、有珠善光寺墓地、伊達市営有珠墓地、室蘭市イタンキ浜墓地、室蘭陣屋裏墓地等で墓標の悉皆調査を行い、前年度までに行ってきた屯田兵のものと比較することとした。その結果、伊達亘理藩の集団移住に伴う一群の墓標は、東北地方の型式的特徴を極めてよく残しており、集団移住による文化伝統の保持がなされていたことが明らかとなった。また、有珠善光寺墓地の状況は、17年度に調査した厚岸国泰寺墓地の状況と酷似しており、江戸後期の蝦夷地支配に伴う、本州文化の流入状況が明らかとなった。さらに、室蘭陣屋裏墓地の状況は、トカチ詰所の状況と似ていた。以上のことから、三年間の総括として、江戸後期の蝦夷地支配に伴う、北方警備のために渡航した下級武士や北方交易をおこなった商人、亘理藩に代表される明治初期の集団移住、さまざまな出身地からなる士族屯田兵のいずれもが、異なる形で本州文化を北海道に持ち込んでおり、移住形態の差はその後に彼らが北海道で形成する文化の違いとなって表れていることがわかった。
