本研究は、空間へ拘束される状態・意識と空間から自由な状態・意識が、同じ都市という空間に住む者の間で、また同じ個人の中でも並在することへ注目し、両者が個々人の当事者視点にとってどのように成立し、体験され、対処されるかを、聞き取りや質問紙調査のデータから切り出すとともに、全体としての都市という制度の重層的な理解を試みている。具体的には下記のA・B2つのタイプのフィールド事例を追っており、本年度は以下の研究を行った。(A)介護を受けている家族を持つ可能性が高い中高年を対象に、昨年度東京都目黒区で行った「介護への対応と親子の住み方についての調査」(区内50-69歳男女個人1200名対象、有効回答数376)の分析を行い、結果の一部を論文にまとめた(「東京都目黒区在住中高年の介護関与:背景としての地域移動歴」『日本女子大学紀要人間社会学部』18)。地元に残った子が同居して親の面倒を見て家を相続する、という「田舎の兄さん」(落合恵美子)と同形の行動は、目黒区という都心に近い地域に生まれ、現在も目黒区在住の人々にも顕著に見られることがわかった。つまり親と同居し介護等に当たる比率が高い。一方、東京圏外出身者は、親とは別居で介護等にも関与しないケースが多く、むしろ「田舎の兄さん」に任せる側に当たっていた。ただし、こうした相続と扶養のバーターが該当しない、住宅の相続や同居はしないが通いで親の面倒を見るというタイプが、今回の調査対象者では東京50km圏出身者に比較的多く見られた。(B)阪神淡路大震災後に住民のおよそ3分の2が地域外へ転出した、神戸市灘区琵琶町の震災時住民の経験を、昨年度に引き続き追うため、当地区に夏期と冬季の2度訪れ、聞き取り等を行った。震災後に成長したコミュニティ活動が転換期に入り、活動メンバーの入れ替りも増加していることを、継続的に観察できた。
