大学は、現在、グローバル化する知識経済の中で、多様化する地理的空間のダイナミズムの中に置かれている。大学は、知識の生産、労働力の訓練、ベンチャー・ビジネスの起業などを通じて、「ハイテク」地域の発達にとって重要な役割を担う。このような観点から、知識経済における主要なアクターとして、高等教育機関、特に大学が、研究活動、科学技術とイノベーション、高度技能者の教育と訓練などの多様な活動を通じて果たす都市や地域への経済的・社会的・文化的貢献についての関心が高まっている。一方で、大学はこれまでにない競争の時代におかれている。国内外の資金をめぐる競争、国際化した高等教育市場におけるランキングの普及とブランディング戦略、国際的な学生の流動性の高まり、より優秀な学生や教員、研究者を獲得するための競争と枚挙にいとまがない。本研究「大学間連携システムとイノベーション:知識経済におけるネットワーク戦略の国際比較」は、大学を取り巻く広義の科学技術政策とイノベーション政策の流れを押さえるところから出発した。これらの政策の多くは国のレベルで形成されるが、大学の活動は、国際レベル、国家レベル、地域レベルと多層に渡る。本研究では、第一に、政策と大学組織とのさまざまな緊張関係の中で大学の戦略的な地理的空間が形成されていくプロセスを明らかにすることを試みた。第二に、大学間、あるいは大学と産業、大学と地域コミュニティとの間に見られるさまざまな形態の「組織間ネットワーク」に着目した。具体的な研究対象となった大学間ネットワークには産学連携を目的にしたもの、国際的な研究向上のためのもの、教育活動に焦点を絞ったもの、地域連携に焦点を絞ったものなど、異なる形態を対象とした。
