The aim of this study was to clarify the mechanism of stimulated mucin secretion by dietary fiber ingestion and its physiological effects. In summary, the present research program clarified the followings:1. The small intestinal and colonic mucins are secreted in proportion to the settling volume in water (a numerical representation for bulk-forming property) of dietary indigestible components.2. Stimulated mucin secretion by insoluble dietary fiber reaches its maximum at 5 days after starting IDF ingestion and disappears at 5 days after ceasing insoluble dietary fiber ingestion, suggesting that this stimulatory effect is accordance with the replenishing cycle of epithelial cells.3. The measurement of O-linked oligosaccharide chain as a mucin marker is highly correlated with mucins directly determined by a newly established ELISA.4. Insoluble dietary fiber exerts a significant increase in luminal mucin content, but the increased capacity of luminal mucin secretion itself does not disturb the nutrient absorption.
