歯周病で喪失した歯周組織の再生療法として、申請者は骨形成を誘導する性質をもつBone Morphogenetic Protein(BMP)に着目し、その有効性を報告してきた。本研究では、歯周組織再生量の増大をはかる目的で、歯根膜細胞の培養を行い、この細胞をBMPと露出根面との間のスペーサー部分に組み込んで移植する方法を考案して基礎的な検索を行った。先ず、BMPによる組織再生誘導における局所因子について検索を行った結果、既存骨の幅が大きい部位ほど骨形成量が増大することが明らかになった。次に、広い骨欠損部へ培養歯根膜細胞を単独で移植しても、歯槽骨の再生をあまり促進せず、歯根膜細胞の培養とBMPの複合移植によって歯周組織の再生量を増大することができる可能性が明らかとなった。
