本研究では,社会主義国家の指導の下で行われている中国の「死の再編」について,文化人類学的な考察を行った。具体的には,非農村部を主な対象とした葬儀施設である「殯儀館」(火葬場/セレモニーセンター)と「公共墓地」を対象とし,上海、北京といった改革の先進地における状況を踏まえつつ,現在改革が進行しつつある,内陸部の陵西省中部地域をフィールドとして研究を行った。,これは従来の研究史のうえで欠落していた対象であるだけでなく,火葬運動や墓地の復興といった部分的には散発的な報告の見られる現象を全体としてどのように理解すべきかという研究の新機軸を模索する意味で重要であるといえる。この研究で用いた研究者の立場は次のようなものである。従来の漠然とした社会変化を発掘する作業,および政策とそれに対抗する人々という枠組みでは理解できない複雑な対象を検討するにあたって,政策(葬儀改革),行為の主体(エージェント),文化資源(旧来の慣習)を設定し,それぞれが出会う場所として上述の研究対象を選択した。その結果,先行研究に見られる,政策の理解をもって葬儀改革を理解する作業とは異なる次元で今日の中国における死の再編を理解する基礎を確立した。また,旧来の慣習と実際の行為のズレに着目する,主に農村部を対象とした人類学的葬儀研究を相対化し,国家の枠組みのなかで再考する議論を形成することを可能とした。このことで,先行研究の問題設定を踏まえつつ,より整合的な理解へと発展する架橋を果たすことができることとなった。他方で,政府の機能縮小とサービスの産業化が進む今日の中国において重要度を増す,国家と人々を媒介する集団としての葬儀産業従事者の機能と影響について十分に検討できなかったため,政策と人々の相関性について十分に考察が行われなかった。調査研究の過程で明らかとなった,この杜会を間接化する集団については今後の検討課題とする。
