多民族多文化社会として知られるアメリカ合衆国ロサンゼルス大都市圏を研究対象として、現地におけるフィールドワークに基づいて、移民の流入と適応戦略、エスニックタウンとエスノスケープ、都市構造の動態を調査研究した。都市構造の変化における移民の役割、そしてダイナミックなロサンゼルス大都市圏の地域像が明らかになった。多民族多文化社会に関する理解を深めるうえで地理学的な基礎研究が重要であることが再認識された。
